We often talk about making our homes more environmentally friendly. But how often do we think about making our gardens more environmentally friendly? Choosing to make your garden a better place to be, is not only good for you and your family, but also better for your carbon footprint on the environment. So here are some things that you could be doing to make your garden a better place to be.
First of all, you need to think about getting together a compost heap. A compost is food and plant waste that has decomposed. It is a great way to dispose of waste food, as well as plant cutting and grass when you mow the lawn. Having a compost helps to add nutrients back into your garden and stops things that could be decomposed from having to go to landfill. There are only benefits from having a compost heap really. It could just be set up in a corner of your garden. Or you can get specific boxes to start it all in. You could get a wooden crate or box and make a start with it. Just make sure that you turn it occasionally with a garden fork and add water from time to time if it doesn’t rain a lot where you are. That is a great step to making your garden better for everyone, as well as reducing how much food and waste you throw away.
Another great thing to do is to get a water butt. It helps to conserve water to use on your lawn and plants. Then you don’t have to use water from a hosepipe when you need to do some gardening. If you find that a lawn is hard to maintain, then you could choose to have a rock garden instead. They are lower maintenance than lawns and won’t need to be watered.
If you’ve got kids, though, it is often better to have a yard for them to play safely in. As a result, you might want to look into more environmentally friendly ways to care for your lawn. One of the first things is to make sure that you use organic fertilizers and don’t use pesticides. That is bad for everyone, including your kids. It can also be really harmful to the little visitors that you get in your garden that come to say hi. Second, of all, you might want to look at better ways to mow your lawn. If you currently have a petrol or electric mower, are there other options? Those two can be quite harmful to the environment. So maybe a manual one or perhaps a solar powered one. I came across an informative read online the other day, about how to find an environmentally friendly lawn mower. So it might be worth looking into if you are serious about this kind of thing.
Have you got a garden that you love to take care of? I’d love to hear what steps you are taking to make it a better place to be. Let me know in the comments!
