Most moms and nonnies know the struggle of getting the kids to go to sleep at night is real. Why is it that they can be tired and cranky all day. But as soon as they get into their pajamas, they seem to spring back to life and couldn’t possibly go to sleep for at least another hour or two? Grrrr, It’s so annoying! But there are some ways to ensure that they go to sleep pretty much as soon as their head hits the pillow. Read on to find out what they are.
Have a restful bedroom
The number one thing that you can do to ensure that you kids fall asleep quickly is to make sure that they have a restful space in which to sleep.
For kids, in particular, their bedrooms aren’t just places that they go to rest. But are also the place in which they explore the magic of imaginary worlds, and get to play with all of their favorite toys. This can be pretty hard to shut off from when it come to bed times.
So to help them, you need to factor in some time to pack away and put everything in order. So then their space is organized and calm for when it’s time to go to sleep.
Have a clear routine
The next thing that can really help when getting the kids off to sleep at night is a routine. All of us humans are creatures of habit. If we do something enough times, our brain will start to automatically skip to the next stage of the process.
That means a set routine for going to bed like switching the TV off an hour before, brushing their teeth, then reading a story can be very helpful. This is because they will gradually they will become used to doing this as a precursor to sleep.
Tire them out
Another great trick to getting them to sleep well at night is to spend the day doing activities that will use up all that excess energy that they have. For example, you can take them on a nature hike, or a long bike ride.
Or why not try some of the other local family days out in your area. Like trampolining centers or theme parks. It is in places like that that they will get to do a lot of physical exercise. So will definitely be ready for bed, once the end of the day comes.
Use white noise or music
Something else that can be super helpful in getting both younger and older children off to sleep is using relaxing music or ambient noise. In fact, you can get a lot of different sleep and relaxing tracks from services like Spotify and Youtube.
You can even get white noise, which is said to be very soothing for those trying to get to sleep. Although it’s probably best to try more than one type to see which work works the best.
The return and repeat method
This is when the kids like to get up during the night once they have been put to bed. It can be difficult to do at first but pays dividends in the long run.
All you do is pick them back up and return them to bed. You don’t even need to say anything. Then after a few nights, they will realize it’s pointless trying to get out of bed during the night, and this behavior will stop.
