It’s a bit too much to ask to cut all processed foods out of your diet. However, it’s easy enough to start studying labels, and choosing the ones with less and simpler ingredients. In particular, you should be avoiding stabilizers, excessive fat and sodium, and artificial colors and flavors.

While you’re paying closer attention to the foods you put in your shopping cart, keep an eye out for anything that carries an “organic” label. Though you may wind up paying a little more, this will instantly ensure that the food you and your family are eating is that much cleaner. From the routine fruit and veg you bring home to going online to find an organic coffee wholesaler, there are all kinds of things you can replace for an organic alternative. While the difference in nutritional value is fairly negligible, organic produce is far less likely to be contaminated with pesticides, and meat is less likely to carry superbugs, immune to modern antibiotics.

By cooking more meals at home, you’ll be able to shift more of your grocery budget towards healthier foods, and potentially save yourself money. Furthermore, a lot of restaurants you’ll eat at use highly processed ingredients to prepare their meals. If home cooking screws up the schedule you like to stick to, try mastering a few single pot dishes that you can whip up easily. A lot of these can be frozen, and reheated to feed the whole family for the week ahead.
