Life is full of little aches and pains, many of them come and go unexplained without any need for a fuss. Especially as we age, our bodies seem to do a lot more complaining. It’s easy to get complacent or to ignore a problem. However, there are some problems not worth ignoring. Either they can be truly dangerous, or they can be a lot more manageable if you get the courage together to tackle them head-on. Here are three major pains that no-one should be ignoring.
Back to basics
Back pain isn’t always life-threatening, but it does have a high risk of becoming severely debilitating. Back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide. There are a lot of different causes for back pain and there are many nonsurgical treatments such as using muscle relaxants and back braces. You can recover from many backaches by improving posture, engaging in more low-impact exercise, and seeking massage therapy. However, if there’s any numbness, trauma, tingling, or loss of bowel function, you should seek the doctor immediately as there may be an emergency. If back pain doesn’t come with any of those traits but persists beyond a period of two weeks, it’s time to figure out what the source is.
The heart of the matter
Heart disease is still the largest preventable killer in the world of medicine. For that reason, chest pain should never be ignored. There are some kinds that are less of a life-threatening risk, such as chest pain that improves with exercise, which might be a sign of acid reflux. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get it checked out. There are plenty of causes of chest pain related to the heart, lungs, blood flow, the gastrointestinal system and much more. You should arrange a checkup any time you experience sharp or prolonged chest pain, even if it goes away after some time. However, if you experience sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness or nausea, it’s time to call the emergency services. These are signs that heart disease may play a factor and can even be precursors to a heart attack.
Go with your gut
Gastrointestinal pain, discomfort, or a loss of control might not always be life-threatening or particularly debilitating. However, if you experience prolonged GI symptoms, then you should go to a GI doctor anyway. Conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and other GI issues can last with you a lifetime. But if you get on them early and find the right treatment plan and lifestyle changes, you can mitigate a lot of the pain and some of the more embarrassing symptoms. Ignore them, and they could be exacerbated. Gut troubles are a common symptom of bowel cancer, as well, one of the forms that we aren’t watchful enough for.
